Panthers vs Steelers: The Panthers are led by head coach Ron Rivera, quarterback Cam Newton and running back Christian McCaffrey the Panthers’ ground attack gash a strong Steelers run defense We explore in our betting preview of Thursday night’s game. Without question, Pittsburgh had a bigger and tougher game in an AFC North clash with bitter rivals, the Baltimore Ravens.
The game had even more spice as the Ravens QB Joe Flacco had effectively called the Steelers soft. Baltimore and Pittsburgh are fierce divisional rivals and the 23-16 win only confirms what has been bubbling for a while. The Steelers are a serious outfit again this year. Panthers vs Steelers Live.
For the Panthers they are coming off two home wins, the latest of which was a comfortable enough victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They raced into a 35-7 lead in that one and while were pegged back a bit in the fourth quarter (more on that later), they did get the all-important win. Question now is, who will be more affected by the short week?
Steel motors revving up
The Steelers are really starting to motor. They started the season weakly; drawing with the Browns and then losing two of their next three. It was a worrying time for a team that was missing one of its best players as the Le’Veon Bell drama continued. The emergence of James Connor has meant that the loss of Bell has not been as severe, Connor is currently the league’s second-leading rusher and everyone knows about the talent Pittsburgh have at WR.
Antonio Brown is arguably the best receiver in the game, while second-year receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster leads the team in receiving yards and receptions. However, it is defence that Pittsburgh have really changed things around. They haven’t allowed more than 21 points in a game since September and held Baltimore to field goals on three of its four red zone trips this week.
Two of the best — and hottest – teams in the NFL go head-to-head Thursday night in Pittsburgh when the Steelers (5-2-1) host the Carolina Panthers (6-2).
The Steelers hold a slim lead over the Cincinnati Bengals for the top spot in the AFC North, and have won four straight games. The Panthers own a three-game winning streak and are one-game out of first place in the NFC South, trailing the New Orleans Saints.
Both teams are solid on both sides of the ball, play largely mistake-free football and feature two of the more respected quarterbacks in the game — Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger and Carolina’s Cam Newton. Roethlisberger has 16 touchdown passes this season, one better than Newton, though the Carolina QB has a better completion percentage and QB rating. Newton also leads all NFL quarterbacks with 317 yards rushing and 4 rushing touchdowns — adding a distinct wrinkle to the Panthers’ offense.
The Steelers continue to succeed without holdout running back Le’veon Bell, who was spotted this week back in Pittsburgh working out at a local gym. James Conner stepped in and is second in the leagu in rushing with 706 yards. He also is third on the team with 38 receptions out of the backfield.
The Steelers (5-2-1) are coming off a workmanlike win over the Baltimore Ravens. Their offense is clicking on all cylinders, but the team may be in for a major distraction. Holdout running back Le’Veon Bell has reportedly been sighted in Pittsburgh and could be planning to return to the team. They haven’t needed him on the field, because second-year running back James Conner has been a revelation.
The Panthers (6-2) have managed to keep the streaking New Orleans Saints within striking distance in the NFC South. They’ve got their running game going, no surprise there. However, quarterback Cam Newton is completing 67.3 percent of his passes, a career-high by far.
